Video shooting and plenary meeting, Munich
22. - 23. July 2024
A special meeting of the CoDA Group took place in Munich from July 22 - 23.
On Monday, July 22, the members of the CoDA group made their appearance in front of the camera. In cooperation with Stadtwerke München (SWM) and a professional production team, scenes were recorded for two short films. Once completed, the short films are intended to inform a broader audience about current structural monitoring, as well as the CoDA Group's research and cooperation with SWM. All current and former members of the research group were invited to the video shoot.
Parallel to the video shoot, a temperature sensor was installed in the ceiling of the Scheidplatz subway station. The installation marked an important step towards enabling temperature compensation in the evaluation of ultrasonic signals.
The day ended with a dinner for the CoDA group and research partners.
On Tuesday, July 23, the 11th plenary meeting was held. In addition to the regular status updates from the sub-projects, discussions on the handling of research data and joint publications were scheduled. The discussion was enriched by the presence of cooperation partners such as the SWM.

New Project - Early-stage damage detection in concrete using coda signals and AI
27. June 2023
We are happy to announce that the project “Early-stage damage detection in concrete using coda signals and AI” has been approved for funding by the TUM Georg-Nemetschek Institute of Artificial Intelligence for the Build World.
We have received funding for two PhD positions for a period of 4 years starting from October 2023. The first PhD student will work on developing generative methods for characterizing coda signals and the second PhD student will work on material scale experimental design, data generation, analysis and applications. The Chair of Materials Science and Testing (Prof. Gehlen) is currently looking for suitable candidates. Both PhD students will be integrated into the Research Unit CoDA and will work in close collaboration with all sub-projects of the Research Unit CoDA.
Workshop, Berlin
06. - 08. February 2023
From 6 to 8 February 2023, the research associates of the research unit CoDA met for a workshop at BAM in Berlin. The meeting was the first opportunity for the project team to come together in the new constellation resulting from the successful departure of previous PhD students and the joining of new project members. The aim of the workshop was to recapitulate the work done and goals achieved in the first funding phase and subsequently to discuss the tasks and plans for the second funding phase across subprojects. A series of project-related lectures further strengthened the knowledge base and communication across the different research areas.
Summer School, Zugspitze

Thermal Testing on a Large-Format Reinforced Concrete Beam, Bochum
October 2020
The influence of temperature changes in a component on the codasignal was investigated at the Ruhr University Bochum on a reinforced concrete beam of 3.5 m length with rectangular cross-section (w = 0.25 m x h = 0.5 m). Different temperature states (constant and linearly varying over the height) were investigated by established as well as novel temperature measurement techniques (thermocouples, infrared camera, fiber optics). Special attention was paid to the comparison of the measured temperature fields with ultrasonic attribute maps.
Summer School, Berchtesgaden
28 September - 02 October 2020
From 28th of September until 2nd of October 2020 the summer school of the research unit CoDA took place in the TUM Research Station Friedrich N. Schwarz near Berchtesgaden. To carry out the school in times of Covid-19 a hygiene concept, including reduced bed occupancy and mandatory face masks within the research station, was implemented. Some guest speakers poarticipated via online video conference. However, for the creative process and the project progress the presence of the students and project members was essential. Apart from an integrated project meeting with corresponding research updates of the individual subprojects guest lectures were held by german and international speakers on current research topics from academic background as welll as from industry.
Comparison of Different Methods for Temperature Induction in Reinforced Concrete Structures, Bochum
September 2020
In some experiments, water cooling, water heating, silicone heating mats, infrared radiators and a specially developed Peltier cooling system were investigated for their suitability for temperature induction in concrete structures. In addition to purely quantitative results, such as the maximum achievable temperature-time behavior, the factors of interaction between the component and the temperature control system, the temperature control, the temperature transition and the temperature control are mainly investigated.
Installation of ultrasonic sensors at the Gänstorbrücke, Ulm
21 - 25 SEPTEMBER 2020
Ten ultrasonic sensors were successfully installed in the tension member at the Gänstorbrücke in Ulm during the week of 21.09.2020-25.09.2020. By means of regular measurements with attached and embedded sensors, changes in the structural component are to be detected using coda wave interferometry. Thanks to the sensor technology already installed by the engineering office Schiessl Gehlen Sodeikat and the company Vallen Systems, the measurement results can be compared with common methods (acoustic emission, strain gauges) in case of suspicion. The research group hopes that this will provide further insights to improve damage detection and differentiation with coda waves on real components.
Furthermore, 20 sensors could be embedded in the middle of the bridge in the same week. This experiment is part of a project financed by the Federal Road Research Institute (BASt). The research group should also benefit from the evaluation of the data in the middle of the bridge.
