The German federal research institute for material science and testing in Berlin tests, researches and advises to protect people, the environment and material goods. This includes the development, validation and standardization of means of non-destructive testing and monitoring methods for civil engineering. One of the main fields of research in the fields of infrastructure, energy and material characterization are advanced ultrasound-based measurement techniques.
PD Dr. Ernst Niederleithinger
Principal Investigator
Head of division 8.2 „Non-Destructive Testing Methods for Civil Engineering “.
With over 10 years of experience in coda wave methods for NDT he is the lead scientist for the BAM project within CoDA.
Camila Sanchez Trujillo, M.Sc.
Research Associate
Camila Sanchez works as a research associate at BAM. The topic of her research is to use Ultrasound combined with Acoustic Emission data to improve imaging methods and take it to 3D simple structures. In addition, she uses thermal modulation effects to help assess the damage level on concrete reinforced structures. She completed the Geophysics Master’s Program at the Université Grenoble Alpes, France in 2021. Then she worked as a research engineer at ISTerre focused on passive seismic methods (ambient seismic noise) to monitor earth processes and imagery of the earth. She has developed skills in signal processing, data management, inversion methods and wave propagation. Now, she has joined the CoDA-group to apply these techniques to concrete structures.
Dr. Herbert Wiggenhauser
Associated Researcher
Dr. Wiggenhauser is the initiator of this proposal and guided the application process as former head of BAM department 8.2 until his retirement end of 2017. Dr. Niederleithinger, who wrote major parts of this proposal, took over the lead of BAM-project thereafter. However, Dr. Wiggenhauser stays available as contact person to all partners during the project and takes responsibility for the data management system.
Niklas Epple, M.Sc.
Research Associate
As part of his PhD research project he is dealing with ultrasound data analysis and the development of imaging procedures for damage detection. In his master program (Tu Delft, ETH Zürich und RWTH Aachen) he gained knowledge of acoustic wave propagation in various media and investigated ultrasound measurements in bridge girders in his thesis research project.
