Starting in the upcoming summer semester, a new practical course will be offered at the Chair of Materials Engineering of Additive Manufacturing, which is aimed at students in the master's program. As part of the practical course, the thermomechanical behavior of different metallic materials will be investigated using a welding and forming simulator, the Gleeble 3800-GTC. These experiments and supplementary metallographic analyses are used to identify and evaluate the implications arising from temperature control in additive or welding manufacturing.
The experiments include:
- Thermo-physical simulation of the manufacturing process: application of different temperature cycles close to the process as well as heat treatments using a thermo-physical simulator (Gleeble 3800-GTC).
- Tensile test: characterization of the properties resulting from heat conduction
- Hot tensile test: investigation of hot cracking susceptibility
- Metallography: Preparation and execution of metallographic examinations for the analysis of the microstructure and/or the hot cracks that occur
- Hardness measurement: analysis of the hardness in the initial state as well as after application of different temperature cycles
The students thus gain a fascinating insight into the thermomechanical material behavior during additive manufacturing or welding as well as into the experimental work at the chair.
The practical course will be offered as a block practical course, probably in September 2021.
Registration for the internship takes place via the central registration procedure for university internships in TUMonline as of 25.01.2021
